Week Ten

This week I decided to listen to "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin! I really like this song, but the only negative to choosing it is the fact that it will take about a half an hour to listen to it three times, where as a normal song would be done in about the same amount of time that one go around of "Stairway to Heaven" would take. Once again, there were a lot of good song choices to listen to, but I guess today I was in the mood for some Led Zepplin. Much like last week's pick, I really like the intro of the song and I like how slowly it rolls on and then as time goes on it picks up more and more until, before you know it, you're in the middle of a lot of great sound. The intro lasts a very very very very very long time. It's pretty darn slow for about  two minutes until the guitar picks up a bit and the noise gets louder. It's not until after the 4th minute that drums finally enter the song and we pick up more and more. I mean, the song is 8 min...

Week Nine

This week I decided to listen to "Hotel California" by the Eagles. This song is literally one of my favorites of all time and I think I can say it's top 10 for me. I can't remember the first time that I heard this song but I do remember listening to it on replay over and over for what seemed like weeks! I also remember talking to my dad about this song and although I can't remember what exactly we talked about, I just remember being very happy I had just found a great song AND my dad liked it too! Anyways, the song is a great one for many reasons. I really like the song because of the variety in the song. There's so much going on and there's a lot of different sounds at different times creating a whole new world of music. The message of the song is a bit interesting as it has to do with a man stuck in this place that he can't get out of. "You can check in any time you'd like, but you can never leave," are just some of the lyrics showing t...

Week Eight

This week for the week eight blog post, I decided to listen to "A Change Is Gonna Come," by Sam Cooke. I already had this song downloaded on my phone which once again shows that the song choices are only getting better! I am actually a big fan of Sam Cooke. The first song I heard from him was "Having a Party" and it was while I was at a family grocery store close to my home town as it was playing over the speakers. I liked the song/artist so much that I decided to get out my phone and search for the song myself! I came to learn about Sam Cooke and ever since that time I have really loved his music! This song in particular is one of my favorites from him and I really like the message. It is a sad song, as far as all the bad things and "hard living" that he has gone through, but he holds an optimistic view throughout the message and life of the song. I think everyone can relate to that message as we all go through some hard times, but I think it's import...

Week Seven

This week I decided to listen to "Yesterday" by the Beatles for the week seven blog. As I have mentioned in previous posts, we are slowly starting to get to music that I actually really enjoy and I think this week hit the head on the nail with our song choices. I can say that I actually know  about half of the songs of the week! Anyways, this song is actually one of my all time favorite songs. I enjoy how calm the song is and although the story behind the lyrics is a bit sad, I kind of like the peaceful sadness HA! In essence, his life today  has fallen apart as the woman he loves has left him, and that's why he says that he "believes" and "longs" for yesterday, when his girl was still with him. I have always liked songs with stories behind them, and although this song doesn't give every detail or a lot of progression through a story, but rather a reflection at a point in time, I still like the song a lot. There's even a movie named after this ...

Week Six

For this week's song, I decided to listen to "La Bamba," by Ritchie Valens. This is the first time I have decided to choose a song I didn't quite understand as it's sung by Ritchie Valens in Spanish, however I still enjoy the song! I'm not quite sure I would have said I liked the song a few years ago when I was in high school, but after some time out of the country, I have really learned to love music in different languages even when I don't understand every word. After listening to the song a few times, I decided to look at the translated lyrics and I've come to learn that it's a song about a dance, "the Bamba!" I really like the upbeat tone of the song that makes you want to get up and dance! I'm not much of a dancer but I can't lie when I say this song makes me feel like I can. It's sad that Ritchie Valens died so young, because as discussed in class, you only wonder what else he would have come up with as time went on! I k...

Week Five

This week I chose to listen to "Nancy" (With the laughing face), by Frank Sinatra or "The Sultan of Swoon." I can say that I'm happy to finally get to some artists that I know and enjoy! I can't say I am too big into older music of this time period but I do enjoy Frank Sinatra! Like we spoke about in class, he combines the crooning style with a more Italian opera-ish feel and that comes out in this song. I enjoy the soft and smooth intro into the song as Frank Sinatra comes in with the vocals. The entire song has a very soft and warm feel to it. It's pretty similar to the feeling that you get when you listen to your classic pre-Christmas music in preparation for the holidays. I feel like I should be listening to this song around a fire with a nice warm blanket and some hot cocoa. I also thing it's interesting that the song itself, as far as the lyrics go, try and emulate those same feeling to "Nancy." Frank speaks about how he (or the subje...

Week Four

The song I chose to listen to this week was "Gospel Ship," by the Carter Family. This song has a really old feel to it. The cover of the album on Apple music reads: "Country Music's First Family," and when you listen to the song you can tell why! Just as mentioned in class, this song landed in the "sacred" music genre as its a song about the "good news" and the joys that come when they share the message of the gospel. The song was written by A.P. Carter and then performed by the Carter Family. Unlike some of the other songs I have written about over the last few weeks, I can't say I am really inclined to listen to this one over and over. It's a little bland to me and I feel like I'm stuck with one tone. I am a big fan of country music, however I can't say that this is my favorite kind of country music! As everyone knows, most of the time when something new comes out, it kind of sucks and I think that's what happened here. ...
