Week Five
This week I chose to listen to "Nancy" (With the laughing face), by Frank Sinatra or "The Sultan of Swoon." I can say that I'm happy to finally get to some artists that I know and enjoy! I can't say I am too big into older music of this time period but I do enjoy Frank Sinatra! Like we spoke about in class, he combines the crooning style with a more Italian opera-ish feel and that comes out in this song. I enjoy the soft and smooth intro into the song as Frank Sinatra comes in with the vocals. The entire song has a very soft and warm feel to it. It's pretty similar to the feeling that you get when you listen to your classic pre-Christmas music in preparation for the holidays. I feel like I should be listening to this song around a fire with a nice warm blanket and some hot cocoa. I also thing it's interesting that the song itself, as far as the lyrics go, try and emulate those same feeling to "Nancy." Frank speaks about how he (or the subject) feels being surrounded by Nancy, which is warm and happy. I think he does a really good job at making you feel the same feelings he has for Nancy. It makes me want to meet Nancy and see if I feel the same "glow." Perhaps more songs than I realize do somethings similar (as far as everything pointing to the subject of the song), but I guess this is the first song I have realized that aspect of music to that extent!
Coming into this course, I knew we would be talking about frank Sinatra in some detail, and I was very excited, my mom is a big fan of his and influenced me liking him as well. Seeing you post about him makes me happy, it reminds me of my mom and her love for music as well. I really like your interpretation of the song, and how if you were in the writers shoes, what the song would be about to you. I agree, I am curious if Nancy really has this "glow" Sinatra spoke of, or if it just something only he can see.
ReplyDeleteI like Frank Sinatra too and this is such a cool song! I like how you described it as having a "pre- Christmas" feel to it. I like how you mentioned the "warm sound" to the song as well.
