Week Four

The song I chose to listen to this week was "Gospel Ship," by the Carter Family. This song has a really old feel to it. The cover of the album on Apple music reads: "Country Music's First Family," and when you listen to the song you can tell why! Just as mentioned in class, this song landed in the "sacred" music genre as its a song about the "good news" and the joys that come when they share the message of the gospel. The song was written by A.P. Carter and then performed by the Carter Family. Unlike some of the other songs I have written about over the last few weeks, I can't say I am really inclined to listen to this one over and over. It's a little bland to me and I feel like I'm stuck with one tone. I am a big fan of country music, however I can't say that this is my favorite kind of country music! As everyone knows, most of the time when something new comes out, it kind of sucks and I think that's what happened here. (If you like this song, I'm really sorry haha!) But on the contrary, as they come out with better versions of whatever it is that's "new", it usually gets a lot better. I think my point is proven with this song and type of music. If this was considered country music back in the day, then I don't think I would have considered myself a fan of country music. The message is good and I think that's the best part of the song, but as for the actual music behind it, it's a little tasteless to me! I am just thankful country music has changed.

Comments

  1. This song is almost like Barbary Allen in a way, very bland and a large focus on the lyrics of the song. I agree that this song isn't the best, but I guess it's what they had to listen to back then.

  2. I understand what you mean about it being a bland song and not listening to it over and over. To me it seems pretty stiff and whitewashed. Not a bad song, but definitely a little rough since it was right at the beginning of country. I'm also grateful country music has changed :)
