Week Nine

This week I decided to listen to "Hotel California" by the Eagles. This song is literally one of my favorites of all time and I think I can say it's top 10 for me. I can't remember the first time that I heard this song but I do remember listening to it on replay over and over for what seemed like weeks! I also remember talking to my dad about this song and although I can't remember what exactly we talked about, I just remember being very happy I had just found a great song AND my dad liked it too! Anyways, the song is a great one for many reasons. I really like the song because of the variety in the song. There's so much going on and there's a lot of different sounds at different times creating a whole new world of music. The message of the song is a bit interesting as it has to do with a man stuck in this place that he can't get out of. "You can check in any time you'd like, but you can never leave," are just some of the lyrics showing this! Some have interpreted the song to speak about the "American Dream" and the downfalls to the glory of living "the American Dream," but I am not prepared to say it is about that or not! All I know is that I love the song. Another thing I love about the song is the insane guitar solo that ends the song and seems to go on for minutes and minutes. The song itself is 6 minutes which is quite incredible! There's even a lot of variety in the guitar solo as it changes back and forth and doesn't quite stick with one pattern. All in all, I just love the whole song and the older feel it has to it.

    Ahh! Hotel California is indeed a classic. Much love for the song as well. I for one, definitely agree with the fact that it reminds me of someone in a rut and they just can't get out no matter what they do. (Which isn't very inspirational, but something I think we can all relate to at one point in our lives.) Great choice, also thanks for being done early; I literally can't find anyone done with Week 9 before the day it's due anymore!

    I agree this song is one of my favorite too, and it is crazy that this song is 6 minutes. my favorite part of the song is the guitar solo and just hearing how amazing it is.

Week Two

This week I chose to listen to the song "West End Blues" which was performed by Louis Armstrong. I am a big fan of the trumpet, so I enjoy how the song starts out as it transitions into a bit of scatting by Louis. After a while, the trumpet and singing come to a stop and a piano solo comes in to take the lead for a hot minute and then shortly transitions back to the trumpet, going back and forth to the end of the song. The music almost puts me to sleep as it's got a calm tone throughout the song. If I were to put place to song, I would set this song in the night of a south-eastern swamp-land, similar to the setting of The Princess and the Frog. I just imagine listening to this song, floating slower than molasses down a big swampy river under dim light on a wooden raft. Week Ten

This week I decided to listen to "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin! I really like this song, but the only negative to choosing it is the fact that it will take about a half an hour to listen to it three times, where as a normal song would be done in about the same amount of time that one go around of "Stairway to Heaven" would take. Once again, there were a lot of good song choices to listen to, but I guess today I was in the mood for some Led Zepplin. Much like last week's pick, I really like the intro of the song and I like how slowly it rolls on and then as time goes on it picks up more and more until, before you know it, you're in the middle of a lot of great sound. The intro lasts a very very very very very long time. It's pretty darn slow for about  two minutes until the guitar picks up a bit and the noise gets louder. Week Seven

This week I decided to listen to "Yesterday" by the Beatles for the week seven blog. As I have mentioned in previous posts, we are slowly starting to get to music that I actually really enjoy and I think this week hit the head on the nail with our song choices. I can say that I actually know  about half of the songs of the week! Anyways, this song is actually one of my all time favorite songs. I enjoy how calm the song is and although the story behind the lyrics is a bit sad, I kind of like the peaceful sadness HA! In essence, his life today  has fallen apart as the woman he loves has left him, and that's why he says that he "believes" and "longs" for yesterday, when his girl was still with him. I have always liked songs with stories behind them, and although this song doesn't give every detail or a lot of progression through a story, but rather a reflection at a point in time, I still like the song a lot.
