Week Ten
This week I decided to listen to "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin! I really like this song, but the only negative to choosing it is the fact that it will take about a half an hour to listen to it three times, where as a normal song would be done in about the same amount of time that one go around of "Stairway to Heaven" would take. Once again, there were a lot of good song choices to listen to, but I guess today I was in the mood for some Led Zepplin. Much like last week's pick, I really like the intro of the song and I like how slowly it rolls on and then as time goes on it picks up more and more until, before you know it, you're in the middle of a lot of great sound. The intro lasts a very very very very very long time. It's pretty darn slow for about two minutes until the guitar picks up a bit and the noise gets louder. It's not until after the 4th minute that drums finally enter the song and we pick up more and more. I mean, the song is 8 minutes long itself! Around halfway through the 6th minute, the voices turn from a softer and gentler voice to more of a light scream and the drums pick up quite a bit too. I really enjoy the progression of the song, despite being so long. As we talked about in class, I thought it was really clever that they only allowed you to buy the song if you bought the whole album! I think that was a clever marketing scheme despite being a bit annoying for the consumer! I also thought it was insane that over the span of a decade it was the most played song on FM radio! Anyways, its a great song with a lot going on and I really enjoyed listening to it!
Like you said, this song has a great progression (even if it takes like a million years to warm up). I think you put it really well when you said that it slowly rolls on but then before you know it you're in the middle of a great sound, it's so true. This is one of those songs that you have to be patient with, but it's such a good song that it's worth the journey.
ReplyDeletei agree, the progression is super enjoyable. it's too bad that it is so difficult to find music that will do that now a days. i can really appreciate well thought out music like this
ReplyDeleteI agree that it was a clever marketing scheme to make customers buy the whole album if they wanted this song. That was something i thought was interensting and new and never heard of before this song. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love this song, but I am with you, it was a bit rough to listen to this three times. I had to set aside a lot more time than usual for this.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very long song but totally worth the listen! I agree that although the progression is slow, the build up is amazing.
ReplyDeleteThis song is really long but it's definitely a good one! I like the progression of this song as well. Even though it might be slow, the end is awesome!
